The Black Cat Custom MK 1.5 Americano is the successor of the MKI Americano. In keeping with the Americano theme, this pedal is a replica of the original Tone Bender MK 1.5 circuit, only built with American-made components.
For those of you who don’t already know, the original Sola Sound Tone Bender MK 1.5 circuit was closer to that of a Fuzz Face than what we commonly recognize as a Tone Bender type fuzz. It’s simpler circuit using fewer components, the most notable being the switch from a three transistor to a two transistor configuration.
The Black Cat Custom MK 1.5 Americano continues the conceptual theme of its predecessor in using American made components to replicate a classic vintage British design. The NOS Texas Instruments 2N404 is again the transistor of choice, complimented with NOS Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors, Sprague electrolytic and orange drop capacitors. And yes, we even used Red, White and Blue wire.
The MK 1.5 Americano may not have the extravagant selection or quantity of components that the MKI Americano had, but it also costs $80 less than the MKI. Now that doesn’t mean it’s cheap – far from it. Like our other Tone Bender tributes, the MK 1.5 Americano is painstakingly handwired point-to-point on double turrets and is housed in an American made custom enclosure. If you like the sound of a germanium Fuzz Face, or a two-transistor Italian Vox Tone Bender, then the MK 1.5 is sure to be your cup of fuzz.Made in the U.S.A.
